"Anyone for Cricket?"

The long hot days of summer are hopefully just around the corner, so now is the time to check out your local cricket club. Waitakere Cricket Club have already begun enrolling for teams, with their next enrolment day being Saturday 27 September in preparation for the 18 October start to the season.

"We have a thriving membership of close to 700 people" says Randall Todd, coach of the premier team. "We are financially sound which enables us to provide good training facilities and tracksuits for all our teams." The Club has teams from five & six year olds through to senior men's and women's teams.

Huta Kitchen describes the club as being very 'family orientated'. Huta helps manage the premier men's team which his son, Anaru, is a member. "One thing about this club is that they have nurtured the young talent and have brought it through. The majority of boys here have started as young school boys and continued into seniors." Encouraging kids is part of the 'Club of the Hub' scheme, initiated by the Auckland Cricket Association, which involves being responsible for the training and coaching of six schools. The Waitakere Cricket Club is currently assisting Massey High, one of its six schools, to establish indoor nets.

"Competitive, with a family atmosphere" is how the clubs captain Mabel Todd describes the club. "We have worked on the 'people side of things' with the attitude of encouraging participation in the everyday running of the club." Competition is no stranger to Mabel, who was awarded the Carson Cup at the Auckland Cricket Association Awards for outstanding club player/administrator for last season, the first time a woman has won it in 46 years.

The Club has had success both as a club and through its individual teams. The Grovenor Cup was awarded to the Club by the Umpires in the Auckland competition for its on field discipline, facitities and its grounds. The senior women's team has won the second grade competition three years in a row and have been promoted to the first grade this year. The first grade men's team won their one-day competition last year and were also runners up in the two-day competition. "They are looking to be promoted to the premier grade this season" says Randall.
