Notes on Choosing a Photographer Go back >>

Ability in Wet and dry conditions counts. You need to have confidence in your photographers' ability to get great shots under any conditions. Getting great shots in perfect conditions is one thing but to get them on (heaven forbid) a rainy, windy or overcast day is another. That confidence will give you peace of mind despite the conditions. There is enough stress with out having to worry about your photographer.

Personality Counts?

You will probably spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than your parents!

You need to make sure that:

1. they don't irritate you!!

2. they are sensitive enough not to become the center of attention at the service.

3. they actually listen to YOU and capture the day as you want.

Rehearsals

It is important that your photographer comes to your rehearsal because:

1. They find out what is going on and where the need to stand.

2. They meet the whole bridal party which will make them more relaxed in the formal photos.

3. They meet the minister/celebrant, who can occasionally be very particular about the behaviour of the photographer. This meeting assures mutual understanding.

4. There are a few things photographers need to prep the couple on so that verbal communication with the photographer during the service is not required.

Image Files

Why do some photographers give the image files to the couple and others keep them?

Giving them:Many photographers give the negatives when they first start out photographing weddings as it gives them a good selling point.

Keeping them:

1. Reputation is a big reason for keeping image files. There is a huge difference in quality between local printers and professional photo labs. Bad printing reflects badly on the photographer and can put others off wanting to use them simply because of the printing of the image files. Beginners often just want to get into the market and are willing to forgo this.

2. Finances are also a consideration. Professional photographers give a competitive price for the wedding package with reprints making this a financially viable option.

Our position: I keep the image files for one year (on option 2) and then give them to the couple free of charge. If it is important to the couple to have the image files straight away, they can be purchased for $600 with a list of highly recommended photo developers.
